Frequently Asked Questions
Does DoubleCheck support the Second Amendment?
Yes, DoubleCheck holds the Bill of Rights as the Constitution as the law of the land, and, while we vehemently disagree with some Local, State, and Federal firearms laws, we respect State’s rights to pass laws within the framework of the Constitution. DoubleCheck also respects the Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Amendments respecting the privacy, dignity, and due process of both citizens and businesses. Living safely in America and owning firearms are both rights of the American people which shall not be infringed.
What is DoubleCheck, and what is its mission?
DoubleCheck was born in the wake of a school shooting with purpose and drive to end mass shootings in America, while protecting the rights of its citizens set forth in the Constitution. Using cutting edge technology to put publicly available data into the hands of the firearms industry at the point of sale, resulting in a more informed decision to transact.
Why does DoubleCheck believe in re-thinking “background checks”?
As we have seen time and again, the current background check system is costly, ineffective, government-centric, and time-consuming. It also fails to provide retailers key indicators of the intent or desire to do harm. Rather than rely on the government to provide a solution that will be more invasive, more expensive, and take longer to complete, DoubleCheck is working to establish the new standard in firearms transactions that respects the purchaser and their constitutional right to bear arms, as well as- American businesses’ right to refuse service. There are significant gaps in the transactional screening process - DoubleCheck works to fill these gaps.
Does DoubleCheck replace the existing background check system (NICS)?
No, DoubleCheck does not replace the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). This existing process is designed and was developed to catch career felons, but doesn’t really fit for some of today’s unique societal & cultural challenges, not to mention the challenges of doing business in such an openly litigious environment. DoubleCheck supplements the NICS check by proactively identifying individuals who’ve made their intent to do harm known publicly online and/or who’ve had concerning encounters with law enforcement.
How does DoubleCheck work?
A retailer requests a check by entering a consumer’s phone number into the system (with consumer consent and opt-in, of course). The consumer receives a text message with a link to start their check. The consumer inputs limited and rudimentary information into DoubleCheck, submits, and receives their results on their own mobile device. The consumer may then accept the results and share with the requesting retailer, dispute any details that are perceived as inaccurate, or abandon the transaction. Businesses are free to make any decision about the transaction throughout the process in the same exact way that they are now free to do so – think “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Service.” Once the report and review are completed, the data is not kept. DoubleCheck does not monitor consumers, nor does it share or sell consumer data.
What’s in it for consumers?
In addition to helping to keep our communities safe and being part of a powerful movement of Americans, we are cultivating a membership program with valuable rewards for participation and commitment to our basic mission. We’ll have things like discounts, early access to products, influencer appearances, and more.
Does DoubleCheck violate privacy of consumers?
DoubleCheck does not monitor consumers, nor does it share or sell consumer data. The entirety of our process takes places with the explicit opt-in by and at the control of consumers themselves directly. We don’t collect sensitive information (often it is less information than the business itself requires for the transaction). We adhere to industry standards and best practices, and approach data purging/vaulting in an innovative and effective way.
Is DoubleCheck part of the government?
No, DoubleCheck is a private solution to a public problem. DoubleCheck works to protect the inalienable right of the American people to keep and bear arms and ensure it shall not be infringed.
